Photos And Thoughts, Autumn 2010

Sunday, October 17, 2010 by John Henry

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?  I have so many things I want to do right now, but of course they are all secondary to school, upon which I am trying to keep my majority focus.

I have been using my camera for stills and I’ve got a bunch of half-finished rants and things that I’m working on.  I thought I’d put a few of the photos up online here and let folks see them and tell you what they are, since I’ve not done a proper update.

(Some of you may have seen some of these already.)

New Road Trip Photos

I’ve added some pics in from my trip to California in 2009.  These are actually from a second pass through my master photo collection; I still have thousands that I’ve not started editing yet!

The first picture is a shot of the highway, I-70, heading west-northwest in Colorado between the Kansas state line and Denver.  If you click on the photo it should (eventually) take you to the Picasa album and you can see where this and the majority of my other photos were taken.

The mountains are not yet visible here, but clearly the flat, wide-open land of Kansas is well behind us now.

The next photo was taken on northbound I-25 between Denver and Fort Collins, CO, about four hours later.

Note that the geotag on this image is approximate.  I believe that would make the highest peak you see here Long’s Peak, CO, if my location is right.  If not, then I unfortunately don’t know.

It’s about one in the afternoon here as I’m traveling toward Fort Collins, CO and eventually Cheyenne, WY where I’ll meet I-80 westbound.

You can also see here that I’ve applied a tilt-shift effect to this same image, I think to decent effect; the buildings are enhanced and the size illusion is created, with help from the blurring of the mountains in the background to establish scale and distance.  I’m still not entirely sure if I feel like the phone pole ruins the image or enhances it, though.

Still, this is some truly beautiful country out in the world.  I’m really kind of disappointed in the quality of the photography on a lot of my stuff from driving cross-country.  It was almost all taken while I was moving, because of a million reasons (not the least being I didn’t entirely trust my vehicle to continue stopping and starting!)  I wish I’d had many more weeks to explore it.  Hopefully I’ll get the chance to do so.

We’ll jump ahead now to another new addition to this old album, but from significantly further down the highway.

This is one of those photos that you’re really glad you took.  I’m glad I took this one because it has a clear view of a mile marker on it, so I can say without any doubt that I am 132 miles east of the California-Nevada border on I-80 westbound here.

I was really hoping to get more than this done today, but it didn’t work out.  Thanks to everyone for being so patient and understanding as I completely reset my life at age 40!  I’ll be back soon – very soon, I hope – with more cool things for you to see and think about.  Don’t forget that I’m getting new content up in my Picasa albums much faster than I get a chance to talk about it here, so please feel free to poke around!
