You say, "Sheeple -- People unable to think for themselves. Followers. Glenn Beck's biggest fans. Watchers of Fox News and listeners of Rush Limbaugh who form their entire political thought process and opinion so...lely based on what these talking heads spew forth on a daily basis."
I say "Sheeple -- a stupid, condescending little buzzword used by stupid, condescending little people who are part of mass-produced corporate-sponsored groupthink but really really want to believe they're not."
I figured out that using this word made me look like an ignorant asshole when I was twelve. That was twenty-eight years ago, in 1982, and I'm pretty sure this was not a new discovery even then. It's about time the rest of you figured it out too. It's not clever, it's not witty, and it sure as hell does not establish you as an edgy independent thinker. In fact it makes you look just a hair stupider than the people you use it on, because you're not only groupthinkers, but you're deluded enough to think you ain't.
This use of trendy buzzwords has to stop. Really, it's pretty sickening and irritating. We don't have "right" and "left" anymore, but "DEMONRATS" and "REPUGNANTCAN'TS" I know people who indulge in this sort of thing and I even respect a lot of them, hell some of 'em are a lot smarter than I am, and I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings or attack anyone personally on this, hell I've done it too. But this kind of sloppy pseudo-wit is just not productive. It makes the side of whoever's speaking look like it's manned by snide, self-righteous little bumper-sticker machines. What happened to original thought in this culture? What happened to careful logic and considered rational thought? Chromatic rather than binary thinking?
I understand the need to express ourselves in common terms. I understand the need to have phrases and words by which we know each other. I also understand that these kinds of things are sometimes dishonest - "human cost" instead of "lives lost," "war's ravage" becomes "collateral damage," the left is right and the right is righter and the noose of greed and apathy gets tighter and tighter and we can't breathe think complain can't get oxygen to our brain and have a coke and a smile and a little Castrol to go that extra mile for a camel jockeys got no place in my homeland because the American way is a boot in your ass and the media machine chews us up and spits us out and pretty soon we don't complain we don't witness we don't shout we sit and we acquiesce.
We take it and we accept because if we don't, why they'll take away ouf 60-inch television and we won't have 500 channels of American Idol and the Home Shopping Network but we'll have our whole language boiled down condensed reduced stripped away no need for nuance or subtleties or shades of gray just take that one and another and then another away and when it's all said and done all we really need is one just one word one word to tell us what we are where we've been where we're going and how we're gonna get there and that word is SUCKER.
If you can't be bothered to think of an original way to say something, you probably have nothing to say.
