On The Road Again

29. June 2009 by John Henry 7 Comments

And we're off again. Leaving SLC in a few minutes, headed to stay the night with an aunt & uncle in Grand Junction CO - a little out of my way, but they've offered to get an oil change for me, so that gain (and I NEEEED an oil change) offsets the loss of the gas on the purely pragmatic level, not to mention I get to see family that I haven't seen for 20 years, so that's cool. After that, I'm basically back on charity again; I have an uncle who has suggested that he MIGHT be able to pitch in $100 or $150, but even if he sends $150 that's still about $150 short of Kazoo.

I will NOT have internet access again before I get back to town. If you look at it as a fund drive, the 'goal' is $150. If folks can help me out, that's awesome and I'll sure appreciate it. And I continue to appreciate everyone's thoughts, prayers, and phone calls regardless of whether you have money to help or not. Even if you're worried I'm on crack or something and would rather just meet me and fill the tank than give me cash, that's cool. *All* I need now is gas. I've got a bit of cash on hand that will get me through the toll booths in Chicago and so forth (picked up $100 from a charity in SLC; forgive me for not naming names, but I would NOT be doing any of these places or towns a favor to publicize that they have x amount of resources - there are a lot of scam artists out here).

Goal is $150, and that's how that goes, basically. If you can help out with $5, $50, or $150, or any other amount, I will be greatly assisted by you. If you can't help out with money at all, that's fine too...just say a prayer for me to the deity of your choice and keep me in your thoughts, and maybe all that positive energy will translate into helping me get home another way.

Gotta run. Thanks again and much love to all who have called, sent cash, put me up, or just thought of me as I continue on my little adventure.

Why don't you get a job? I have been browsing through your blogs and to me it looks like most of your problems would be solved with a job.

I saw your response to my post and it just sounds like you are making escuses. If you don't have any money and are homeless washing dishes isn't beneath you. There are plenty of jobs out there if you want to work. They may not pay what you think you are worth but they will pay for food and gas. Where do you think all of these illegal immigrants are finding jobs?

This is where I stop being nice.

Look here, you knuckle-dragging half-wit: nowhere have I suggested or believed that anything is 'beneath' me. You have NO clue what living on the streets looks like. How effective do you think it is to fill out job applications with an address of 'General Delivery?' How badly do you think McDonalds wants to hire someone who has to have their work schedule set up around the availability of public showers? I applied at every fast-food joint, manual labor agency, temp service, and convenience store in Woodland. Would YOU hire someone who can't wash their clothes, can't rely on getting a shower, and might well be seen by one of your customers sleeping in a Wal-Mart parking lot?

This is exactly the kind of obnoxious and utterly fantastical attitude that has been driving me apeshit lately. People who have never really needed anything, never really been hungry, never really been stuck or hopeless, looking down their nose and preaching 'excuses' and 'this and that isn't beneath you.' I'd have happily shovelled shit for minimum wage: nobody is hiring shit-shovelers. I'm not above cleaning bathrooms or making fries or anything else; I'm more than happy to do what I need to survive, so long as it's at least plausible to suggest I *believed* it was legal.

I'm not too proud, and nothing is 'beneath' me. I've never suggested such a thing, nor have I conducted myself in such a manner.

I would respectfully suggest that you haven't the slightest notion what being well and truly BROKE looks like, nor what kinds of obstacles to employment present themselves when you have no home and no income. I find it ridiculous that you should sit there looking down your nose at me like I'm some crackhead or tweaker just trying to avoid working for a living. I bust my ass, and I'm good at what I do, but hell, *I* wouldn't hire someone who was living in their car.

With all due respect, Mr. Logan, when you have *been* in the situation I was in, hovering on the edge of utter hopelessness, perhaps your perspective will be a little more informed. Until then, while I certainly appreciate the time and effort you've spent in writing, I have to say that your 'advice' is rather useless, based on a series of erroneous assumptions about my attitude and approach, and is not rooted in objective reality.

It would be silly to suggest that everyone on the street is pious and flawless, merely the victim of circumstance. There are dozens of mistakes I could point to over the course of my life that impacted my ability to find work in that situation.

However, thinking I was 'above' anything is not one of them, and I'm far from the only person who has been on the streets through no direct fault of their own.

Life is not a TV show, and the pat answers of the terminally comfortable are generally no solution at all to the problems one faces when one has little or nothing to work with.

JH, all I see are excuses for your situation. You are just trying to throw yourself in with homeless people who are really unfortunate in an attempt to get people to feel sorry for you. Your computer and video camera must not be making you any money so the first thing you should do is get rid of them and get some cash. It doesn't matter if you have to buy them back later at a higher price. If you were really looking for a job you would find a way to take a shower and wash your clothes. From what I understand people used to bathe and wash their clothes in rivers and creeks. I know that sounds silly but if a showere were holding me back from getting a job I would go jump in the closest body of water.

As far as not having an address - You are HOMELESS - make up an address or use a friends - so what if you get caught in a lie. You don't have anything to lose. Every excuse that you have come up with could have been solved by a 12 year old. How are you getting your smokes while being homeless?

And now I'm wondering which past/present RSPW mental midget is now using the pseudonym "Tony Logan"...

*shrug* lord knows RSPW isn't the only place I've pissed people off. Who knows what motivates folks like that? Some people appreciate what I have to say, others would call me a liar if I said the sun rose in the east.

I don't lose sleep over it.
