As I was going through my server logs this morning, I was somewhat troubled to see that someone who has access to a client-only section of LowGenius.Com has taken it upon themselves to first track down my Wikipedia user page, and from there spend roughly an hour tracking back to here and reading through my blog posts.
This is my personal space. This is where I state my opinions without throttling them as I need to do with my business site. I don't work every minute I'm awake, any more than anyone else does, although my typical work day runs 10-12 hours.
I don't screen my clients for ideological conformity to my opinions. There are some obvious exceptions to this - if the KKK for instance asked me to build a site for them I'd have to turn it down no matter how much money was involved. But I don't ask my clients to justify, or even describe, their religious or personal beliefs to me if those beliefs are not intrinsic to the work I am doing.
This tends to make me a bit nervous. I'm painfully aware that my social, political, and religious opinions fall well outside the "mainstream" of the region in which I live. I would like to think that I could trust, by default, that my personal opinions are a separate consideration from the quality of my work. Unfortunately, I have found that this is quite often not the case.
I'm not trucking out to the churches and homes of my clients and their employees to see what they think about current events, how they worship, what they eat, what they listen to, who they talk to, or why.
I don't think it's too much to ask that I be given the same consideration. I would hate to think that I could be put in a position of choosing between doing business, and having opinions. If I wanted to put up with that, I'd go back to working in a traditional employer/employee setting.
Oh well. Cross my fingers and hope for the best, I guess. I've got work to do. Take care, all.
