The Actors: Some Kind Of Somethin' (MP3)

18. May 2008 by John Henry

This is probably the most mainstream, pop-ish song I've ever recorded.  It's also probably my second-favorite Actors' song.

This is a very...well, there's just no way around it, it's a little up-tempo middle of the road AOR classic rock piece.  The piano intro will remind you very much of "Happy Together" by The Turtles, but the song itself is actually more upbeat than that one is.

The mix is, again, unfortunately muddy, but not as bad as the other Actors' tracks by any means.  The ending "fade-out" is about 32 bars too long in my opinion; you could shave probably 30 seconds off the end of this without losing anything.  Vocals, especially backing vocals, are a bit on the shaky side.  Drums are there, solid, nothing great or terrible about them - basically, what the song calls for.  There's at least one spot where I'm dragging...again, this is one of the 'end of the night' songs from this session and we were all pretty well hammered and tired and ready to be long gone by the time this was done.  *shrug* oh well.

I really wish we'd had a chance to record these tracks, and many others, in a decent studio that had things like baffling or a drum room to cut the wash down, another 4 tracks at least for mixing, and more than just straight live one-take cuts.  I think this song, in particular, would have benefited nicely from having a genuinely talented engineer like Mike Roche on the board.  This is also far from the best take of the song, in my opinion, but my opinion was only one of four, so there you have it.

Enjoy.
